Q: mike. Can I mulch pine needles? Or do they present a problem?
by Roland Green from Maryland on October 25, 2011

A: Mulching fresh pine needles in this chipper could cause problems, since they carry a lot of sticky sap.

You might wind up having to disassemble the chipper and clean all the parts with alcohol or turpentine to get the sap off before it gums up the works, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Mulching dry pine needles wouldn't be so bad; but you may want to wear a mask, since they can produce a lot of dust. I would avoid putting large quantities through this chipper, since they are pretty tough.

Q: Will this shredder work for garden refuse, such as squash and cucumber vines? And if so, do I have to dry them first?
by JIll from Delaware on July 17, 2011

A: They should probably be dired out, to minimize the moisture in the machine.
by Dale, Product Expert
Q: I bought the ES1600, which is 14 amp. Can I use a 15 amp plug with it? And is it capable of mulching pine cones?
by Dc from South Carolina on April 24, 2011

A: Yes, you can use the 15 amp plug. The 14amp means what its rated for. I wouldn't recomend putting the pine cones in the shreddar.

Sad Story
Got it. Set it up and chipped away for 3 hrs. Went back the next morning and moved to a new area. Never got any farther!!! All of the "one way screws" fell out during the 100 ft move. Tried to call to find out what size screws to get and DUROSTAR WONT TELL YOU. Sent them an email and have had it returned twice because the address in the booklet they included doesn't work. Not a lot of love for these guys and their lousy ?service?
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet

Good Little Chipper
Does a good job as long as all brush and trimmings are dry. Tends to bind up if brush is still green.

Excellent Machine
I have had it for two full years and it had exceeded my expectations. I use it only for limbs of trees, and it does a great job.

I have 4 acres of wooded land so have used it a lot.

Not Sorry
Read many reviews and was hesitant, took 15 min to assemble, no issues. Unit is very quiet, no jams as yet but took time and did not stuff. Cuts quality size mulch, leaves straw and sticks. Very happy with results. Must be careful with size of sticks though. Do not allow to feed it's self on 3/4 to inch. Hang on and do them in stages. Very satisfied (so far). Also quick delivery!
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Exceeded Expectations, Easy To Store

Chute Modification
The black plastic discharge chute is attached to a flange which is tack welded on the inside of the main chute. Debris catches between the main chute and the flange and plugs up the discharge chute. I was able to correct this by siliconing the space between the flange and the main chute. It is important to smooth the silicon so there are no ridges. The chipper now works great.
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Quiet, Reliable

Dont Ever Buy An Electric Chipper Shredder
Couldn't get the wheels on, heavy, noisy, doesn't chip it slices and even small branches get stuck and you have to spend 2-3 minutes resetting. Blade gets dull fast, it is a piece of crap and I can't return it because I got it over the internet. Very big waste of money.
Pros: Price
Cons: Low Quality, Heavy, Difficult To Use, Dont Ever Buy An Electric Chipper Shredder I Slices Doesnt Chip

Not Efficient Model
Flaw in the design of the drop chute. The material exiting the chute does not exit vertically because the chute is bent at an angle. Therefore the exiting material jams constantly. The motor trips and the chute has to be cleared. It is time consuming and unproductive.

Not Bad For The Price, But Gets Backed Up
I had a bit of trouble attaching the wheels. The unit arrived with the wheel covers snapped on so it was unclear how to put them on. Once I popped them off, it was pretty easy.

I was going to use it primarily for leaves and other garden material. I discovered quickly what others meant by it clogging up quickly. If you keep an eye out and make sure that material is coming out of the bottom, it's possible to avoid clogs (mostly). It was particularly problematic on leaves and stalks that... more

Good Household Chipper
Bought it in July of 2013, and I've had it for 1.5 years. It's a solid, good backyard gardener chipper. I use it several times a week to shred leaves and household compost.

It took a little while to figure out how to keep it from clogging (not too dry, too wet, too big, too powdery, etc). It is important to mix the right blend, but now I really like it.

Need A Lot Of Redesign On The Hopper
Had a pile of Magnolia leaves which I wanted to make mulch from. Asked for help/suggestions from Chippers Direct salesman on the best Electric model .He said the durostar was the best they had!!

The durostar has a really bad design on the hopper . Can't get more then a small handful of leaves in then you must push them into the barrel one at a time.
if you have anything larger then a coffee can worth of material ,don't even think this is worth your $$$.

Keith,
Hello

We are sorry to hear the hopper design did not meet your needs. My suggestion would be to contact the manufacturer, in this case Durostar, and let then know your displeasure with the design.

Thank You
